Since January 2009, One Hen, Inc. has worked with schools, clubs, afterschool and summer schools to reach over 17,300 children and educators from 142 countries and across the US and Canada.
Our two innovative programs One Hen: Microfinance for Kids and The Good Garden: Food Security for Kids, have introduced children to two compelling social issues facing our world in a simple, fun, interactive way and invited kids to contribute to solving these social problems and in the process develop vital skills to succeed in school and life.
We have done this by equipping educators with stories, interactive media and curriculum to inspire kids to four values: financial responsibility, personal initiative, global awareness and giving back. Our mission is to empower all kids to become social entrepreneurs, who make a difference for themselves and the world.
In each program, students learn the basics of business and money management. They receive micro-loans to start simple businesses and use their profits to help others. Our programs equip children with the basic financial literacy they need for economic self-development.
INVESTMENT: Seed funding from donors in June 2009 enabled One Hen to develop and test its programs with outstanding results, showing increased business math skills and positive attitudinal changes in students.
